The breakthrough that led to Plurion’s formation was the discovery that organic acids such as Methane Sulfonic Acid (MSA) would allow a number of high voltage but previously impractical "couples" (such as cerium/zinc, cerium/titanium, and soluble lead/lead) to become practical. In addition, AIC found that MSA-based electrolytes offered significant performance improvements over other chemistries, such as vanadium/vanadium.

Organic acids are also readily biodegradable and generally regarded as less aggressive than mineral acids (sulfuric acid). Agencies such as the US EPA now promote MSA as an environmentally-friendly alternative to mineral acids. 

Patent filings are extensive and on-going. The result has been that unlike virtually any other flow battery company, Plurion owns "patents of matter" in its core technologies.
